knowing that
eternity is just
a blink of the eye
then what is after eternity
but a new beginning
want to see it?
it is wise to be unwise
a wise man told me that
it is wise not to trust
a machine I trust told me that
it is wise
to be,
and to be
is wise
but no one is wise
Reluctant to do the work that needs done
because it doesn't really need done
it just needs done in the world of the to-do list
that we all create for ourselves out of misery.
It's the haunted Polish image
thousands, maybe millions
driven by the bad guys to Siberia
Siberia is a place, defined clearly enough
and many Poles - and other ethnic groups -
have indeed been deported there
But in the Polish mind
Siberia is a hellish entity
the place where innocents go
driven by the bad guys
except in hell you burn
and in Siberia you freeze
Siberia - that Siberia -
includes Kazakhstan, Archangel Oblast
and anywhere else they dumped Poles
So next time your small talk
drifts like snow to Siberia
do discuss which Siberia you refer to
you wouldn't want to get it wrong
would you?
a bunch of old men
thinking old men thoughts
about death and misery and physical pain
and mental anxiety about death
with a capital D
living to complain about living
happy in their woes
they take succour in life's sadness
and grieve for what they have lost in life
rather than what is still available to them.
there's a fly in the room
I open the door and let it out.
the house
even the room
is so big in relation to the fly
it might as well have been the whole planet
but the fly is not yet outside
and outside is where the fly belongs
so I gently push and guide it
till it flies out a window
and returns to the wider world.
I hope he is happier there than here.
they sing the songs of my younger days
they still absorb my soul
but only for the moment there
not deeper, not quite whole.
what is whole is mystery
what are we is vast
there's nothing more than everything
and everything is past
everything is emptiness itself.
Everyone caught in the morass of culture
TV, music, browsing, news
unable to see what's going on
right in front of them
or outside their front door.
incapable now of being in control
of their own mental wanderings
they blow in the wind of trash
from one dump to the next.
the mind is at peace
having vented through art
all the mysterious gunk
that gathers inside
the mind, released
from all its concerns
empty as space
full of contentment
at peace with itself
at peace with a world
far from peace
lost in confusion
too many thoughts
on too many subjects
what is important?
wars? attacks? bad news?
what is trivial?
exercise? what you eat and don't eat? peaceful mind?
who am I anyway?
who are you anyway?
who and what do you love?
Ikkyu lost his love, alas
all his spiritual grandeur and awe
plummeted from the Heavens
through darkest earth
to gruesome Hell.
Weeping only tears
he felt it was lifeblood seep away
the tear drops falling from his sunken cheekbones
onto his Zen robe below.
Ikkyu is silent
he feels but cannot mindfully observe his grief
his mastery of mind destroyed
a pain so natural, so powerful
it would shake the Buddha to a broken wreck.
Zen is masterful
Stillness, joy
Peace is the highest aim
But sometimes, we just have to endure
and we suffer.
a neighbour is having their drive and lawn uprooted
and replaced with another, bigger driveway
there's a wee digger parked outside our front
no big deal
in fact my son, thirty-odd years ago
would have been so excited.
but I'm not.
No big deal
but I'd prefer the quiet sounds of nature
No big deal
it's just a flitting moment
in a life in the suburbs
just flitting between birth and death
origin and end
infinity and eternity
no origin and no end
no big deal
now I'm getting used to the noise
and a dog is barking
flitting sounds
Fate and Tao
There has been Mayhem
There has been Hate
There will be Peace
There has been Chaos
There has been Cruelty
There will be Peace
There has been Slaughter
There has been Grief
There will be Peace
They are singing, joyfully
I am listening, intently
trying to decipher the meaning
behind the chants
it's in a language I don't understand
but the tone and feel is unmistakable
it says we are all alive
and that's to be celebrated
it says we are all together
no matter how different we think we are
it says we are all-embracing, and all-embraced
no matter how lonely we feel.
the song goes on forever.
The special occasion
requiring liaison
that brought us together
not now and forever
but for a brief time
when we both held the line
till something crumbled
and we knew we were rumbled
a future aghast
at the waste of the past
and when we both die
it'll be pie in the sky
and when we're both dead
there'll be no more to be said.
what is the essence therefore?
the invisible air we draw in?
the miracle breath we barely notice?
the space between things, that isn't really space
but this air again?
filled with thoughts, concerns, plans
- no time to reflect on air, breath, space
I breathe in and relax
I breathe out and rest my busy head
the little cherry bush blossoms pink
to celebrate early spring.
I lost what I was looking for,
forgot what I had searched for all my life.
The next moment everything returned
The next moment everything is new
and unknown.
Observation in Winter
The wild cry of the dark-red sea
echoes to the ends of the Earth
past restless birds, perched on bare branches
and coloured, speckled, mountains and cliffs
till there is no more sound
no more sights to see,
only the memory of something fading from the mind.
